Gary Illyes, a Trends Analyst at Google, stated at the SMX West conference that he will no longer be estimating when the Penguin 4.0 update will be going live. He says this is due to the fact that he has been wrong about the launch date on a few different occasions.

“It is bad for business,” he stated when asked about the update during the How Google Works: A Google Ranking Engineer’s Story session in March 2016.

For those who were hit by the Penguin 3.0 update 18 months ago, many webmasters and SEO experts are left on the edge of their seats in anticipation. Much of this anticipation is due to the fact that the most recent update left many facing serious consequences and losses since it swept the web back in October 2014. Waiting on this update means many are still waiting to fully recover.

However, when this real-time Penguin update does launch, Google has said it may be the last time. This assumption comes after a tweet Illyes posted in April 2016 that stated, “It’s likely there won’t be a ‘next one,” when referencing the Penguin update.
